| Flooding (Added: June 28, 2007) (Updated: Feb 1, 2008) |
1. What has Chicago city government done to
limit residential flooding? * The City of Chicago has installed residential "rain blockers" so that in times of heavy downpours, rain water will flood the street and thus stay out of the sewers. In theory, this keeps the water out of our basements. 2. What does the city recommend you can do to help avoid flooding in your basement? * Disconnect downspouts - Water stays out of sewer system, collects in your yard. * Buy and use "Rain Barrels." - Normally these cost over $100 each, but for a time in July 2007 will be available for $40 each. Contact the city or call 311 for more info. * Waterproof Your Basement & Get a Sump Pump - This is clearly the most expensive of the options. If installed properly, this will put an end to basement seepage*. * Rod out your main sewer line and catch basin. - This should be done once per year. Be sure to ask your plumber to use a 4" or 6" cutter. Tree roots often wreak havoc on sewer piping; it is important to keep these drains clean so as to keep the water from backing up in your basement! *Many residents of Sauganash Park are very satisfied with PermaSeal Basement Systems (link).
